Spaying and Neuter FAQs

When your pet reaches the age at which it can breed, you will have a decision to make. If you are not planning for puppies or kittens, you will need to take steps to spay or neuter your pet. This procedure comes with many questions, keep reading to see the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions.

Why Spay or Neuter Your Pet?

Spaying and neutering will prevent unwanted pet births and decrease aggressive pet behaviors. When you bring your pet to the vet for those procedures, it can also prevent breast cancer, testicular cancer, UTIs, tumors, and more. Spaying or neutering your pet has benefits for its health and your community.

What to Know for Dogs?

Dog spaying occurs at six months old. Spaying is a procedure done for female dogs, and it involves the removal of the dog’s uterus and ovaries. If you have a male dog, you would want to perform a dog neutering, consisting of an incision in the scrotum and removing the dog’s testes. Although it is traditional to neuter a dog at six months old, larger breeds should wait until a later age to allow complete development before removal.

Information on Cat Fixing

If you have a female cat, you can ask your vet for cat spaying when it is six months old. The procedures for spaying and neutering a cat are the same as a dog. As for cat neutering, the size concerns of dogs are not as relevant to cats. Therefore, male cats that are six months old should be neutered. Waiting can lead to unintended litters and health problems.
