Microchipping Your Pet A Lifesaver in Lost-and-Found Scenarios

At Annapolis Veterinary & Wellness in Annapolis, we understand how much your pet means to you. As pet owners ourselves, we treat your pet like family, providing the same care and compassion we'd want for our own. We are dedicated to helping keep your pet healthy, happy, and safe. Part of that commitment is informing our clients about the importance of microchipping—a pet identification system and a crucial step in ensuring pet safety.

Donna and Dopey

This simple procedure not only helps reunite lost pets with their families but can also mean the difference between life and death for your pet. Consider the story of Dopey the cat. Owned by a lady named Donna, Dopey enjoyed a good life in Sacramento until one day he wandered forty miles away.

A kind older lady took him in, and he lived with her until she sadly passed away six years later. Dopey was then taken to a shelter where he was scheduled to be euthanized. Fortunately, one of the volunteers scanned the kitty for a microchip, and Eureka! Donna had indeed microchipped Dopey, and her information was still current.

Not only was Dopey happily reunited with his original family, but the microchip also saved him from being euthanized. This is just one of many happy ending stories made possible by microchipping technology. In fact, on average, 57% of chipped dogs are reunited with their owners, compared to only 22% of those that aren't. The benefits of microchipping are simple but priceless—it significantly increases the chances of getting your pet back. It's so effective that it's becoming a routine part of preventative care.

What Does the Microchipping Process Look Like?

The rice-sized microchip is encased in glass. Using a syringe, the veterinarian will inject the chip under your pet's skin. It's painless and similar to receiving a vaccination. The chip contains a unique identification number which is registered in a database along with your contact information. Animal shelters, veterinary hospitals, and various rescues all have access to scanners and the database. So, when a pet is found, it can be scanned for a microchip, and upon detection, its owner is contacted, leading to the pet and person being reunited.
