Preventing Heatstroke in Cats and Dogs
If you live in a warm climate or are just dealing with extreme heat in an area where it is not the norm, it is crucial that you not only keep yourself hydrated but also think about your cats and dogs. Heatstroke and dehydration are genuine dangers. Our veterinarians at Annapolis Veterinary & Wellness in Annapolis, MD, can provide tips for protecting your pets.
Why heatstroke is an issue
Humans have sweat glands all over their bodies. Dogs and cats are not so fortunate. They only have a few sweat glands on their feet and around their noses. They rely on panting and the cooling of the air surrounding them to keep their body temperature normal.
What you can do
It is up to you as a pet owner to make sure that your pet is in an environment that won't lead to heatstroke.
• Ensure that your pet has a cool, well-ventilated place to live.
• Provide plenty of fresh water.
• If your pet is an outdoor pet, make sure they have access to shade.
• Never, under any circumstances, leave your pet locked in a vehicle.
• Take early morning or evening walks.
• Avoid hot pavement, cement, or sand.
Watch for symptoms of heatstroke
Be on the lookout for symptoms of overheating in your pets:
• An increase in panting
• Lots of drooling
• Your pet seems confused
• Dizziness and stumbling
• A bright red tongue
• Gums that don't look normal
• Diarrhea and/or vomiting
• Fast-beating heart
• Breathing problems
• Seizure
• Coma
What to do if you see symptoms
If you see these symptoms, get your pet into a cool environment. Apply or spray cool water to their fur and skin. This is an emergency. Get your pet to a vet as quickly as possible. Your animal doctor will know what to do.
