Protect Your Dog or Cat from Heartworm Disease

Protect Your Dog or Cat from Heartworm Disease

We love our pets, and we want them to be as healthy as they can be. When your beloved pet gets routine vet visits with our Annapolis Veterinary & Wellness office, they often get preventative medicine. This keeps them from getting heartworms. Heartworms can be deadly to all of our furry friends. Your pet can get them from bites from infected mosquitos. You need an animal doctor for routine vet visits to check your animal buddy's health. To see the vet, call our Annapolis, MD, veterinarian to get an appointment.

Heartworms

So, what are heartworms? They're tiny worms that can live inside cats and dogs. Mosquitoes spread their tiny babies when they drink your pet's blood. Those then thrive inside your pet companion. They get bigger over time, living in the heart and lungs and other areas of the body. This can be serious for your pet's health.

When your pet gets heartworms, they'll cause both heart and lung problems. When they're in dogs, they live their whole life cycle and even give birth inside your pet. In cats, heartworms won't get fully mature. A dog can get treatment for their heartworms. But, it's very expensive, and it's hard for your dog to go through.

If a cat gets heartworms, there is no treatment for them. In both cats and dogs, it's best to use preventative medicine to prevent these disgusting parasites. If they go without these meds, pets can die from heartworm infection.

Routine Vet Visits

When your four-legged friend gets vet visits from the animal doctor, they are usually checked for heartworms. Then your pet can get preventative medicine as long as they don't already have these parasites. The animal doctor can talk to you about your pet's test results and what kind of meds they need. Sometimes, the vet will give them a medicine that prevents fleas, ticks, and heartworms all at once.
